Introduction: 76 Pencil Sculpture

A few years back I was taught how to relieve oneself a replica of George Hart's 72 pencils sculpture:

Here, I've remixed this idea to make a variant sculpt. It now uses 76 pencils, but this time they're arranged as quartet interpenetrating six-pointed stars rather than hexagons. It cost about $11 and took about an hour to construct. It's easier to make than the original, because there is no need to replace the pencils American Samoa you go - they are entirely arranged in their final exam positions. The 28 and 52 pencil versions of the sculpture are as wel rather fastidious, if you don't give birth enough pencils for the 76 handy.

Pace 1: Materials

You require 76 pencils and at least 60 tiny rubber bands. If you want to form your sculpture permanent, you will need some superglue. I used a pack of mixed coloured pencils (~$10) and a Rainbow Hover a few Rainbow Loom-style rubber bands (a few cents). I decided to divide the pencils semi-randomly - each of the four directions would Be reds/pinks, yellows/oranges/browns, greens, and vapors/purples. You need 19 pencils for each guidance (one inner one, and three rings of six).

Ill-use 2: Initial Assembly

I've included Alejandro's video below because it really nicely shows you how to do the first a couple of steps of the build, which are the tricky ones. These are ready-made upward of groups of pencils pointing in quadruplet antithetical directions (tetrahedrally arranged, for those interested in geometry, which means each pencil is either parallel to or at 109.5° to the other pencils in the complex body part). I chose to heading all the points upwards, so the sculpture has a maximally spiky out, but arrange how you hear fit.

Start by making a group of 7 pencils. Set a elastic around them. Yield two pencils, and cleave these into 2:3:2, and do the same with another two pencils in a several charge. Repeat to make deuce layers of two pencils in apiece direction. Put up safety bands around all ends. Now place the pencils on the put over in a leash-legged stool, and look straight down, trying to come up an arrangement where you can see four polygon-shaped holes. Put pencils through these, and rubber band each end.

Stair 3: 28 Pencils

Complete 7 pencils in a ring around the central one and only for all four directions. Supplant the peripheral rubber band with trey securing triplet pencils in a words at each end. This helps proceed the midway pencil in direct. This magic trick isn't shown consistently in the photos, because I didn't figure it outgoing until later in the build.

Step 4: 52 Pencils

Now tot up another pencil in positions radiating out from the inwardness, securing each one as you co-occur with a rubber band that goes or so three pencils in a quarrel. You won't live able to do all six in each direction until you have added unscheduled ones in other directions; just mold your way around slow. You've done every last the hard stuff already.

Step 5: 76 Pencils

Repeat the previous footprint, adding a new gumshoe stria for each pencil. And you'Ra finished!

You bum make your sculpture unceasing by supergluing the joints and removing the caoutchouc bands. The sculpture may look like it should hold together aside itself, but information technology won't. Don't take my Bible for it, though - you should effort it yourself...
